Health Alert Communications published two versions of Understanding and Preventing AIDS: A Book for Everyone by Chris Jennings (the Booklet and the Textbook) that collectively sold over 165,000 copies.

Understanding and Preventing AIDS: A Book for Everyone was favorably reviewed by the New England Journal of Medicine • adopted for staff education by Massachusetts General Hospital – the hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School; the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); And Walter Reed Army Medical Institute • sold in medical bookstores • purchased by innumerable city and state health agencies • and utilized as a textbook at colleges, nursing schools, and public health schools.

 

Understanding and Preventing Aids

First published in 1985, the Booklet was a miniature compendium reporting the breadth of current scientific understanding at that time.

Several months after publication, the Booklet was adopted as an educational and reference text by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) – the hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. MGH purchased 1500 copies: one for every department head and one for every clinical unit in the hospital. Prior to adoption, the Booklet was approved by the 20-member MGH AIDS Board which included some of the leading AIDS clinicians of the time.

Que es el sida y como prevenirlo

The publisher Grupo Editorial Norma (Bogotá, Columbia) purchased worldwide Spanish rights for the Booklet. Qué es el SIDA y cómo prevenirlo: Un libro qué todo el mundo debe leer was a front list title of Grupo Editorial Norma in Columbia, a front list of companion Deepak Chopra’s Creating Health.

Published in 1988, the Textbook was based on a literature review of over 2,000 medical, scientific, and professional journal articles.

The Textbook was favorably reviewed by the New England Journal of Medicine, and praised in review by Trish Halleron, Director of Education for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AMFAR) in Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved. AMFAR was the leading philanthropic funder of scientific AIDS research at the time.

 

Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company, Boston, Massachusetts, published Understanding AIDS: Strategies for Prevention to serve as an optional supplement for Health.

Health was the best-selling junior high school textbook in the United States at that time. Portions of the booklet were freshly written by Chris Jennings, and portions of Understanding and Preventing AIDS were licensed for reproduction in Houghton Mifflin’s booklet.

Houghton Mifflin’s junior and high school publishing division was purchased by D.C. Heath, which acquired rights to this publication.
